Twenty Uses for Leftover Fruit and Vegetable Peels

Don’t throw your kitchen scraps away, put them to work. The outer skins of fruit and vegetables are filled with flavor and vitamins, and most often have enough matter left in them for another go-round.

Some people are peelers, some people aren’t. Some people swear by the nutrients and fiber found in produce skins, others shy away from the taste or texture, or prefer removing the outer layer to reduce pesticide load. Regardless of your peeling preferences, citrus rinds, potato and other root/tuber peels, scooped-out avocados, and even cheese rinds all have more than one life.

Aim to use organic produce in these applications, and make sure to scrub well. And if you don’t have time or need for them at the moment, most of them can be frozen for future use.

HOME

1. Clean Greasy Messes

Before bringing out the big (toxic) cleaning gunsin the kitchen, try lemon. Sprinkle affected area with salt or baking soda (to act as an abrasive) and then rub with juiced lemon halves. (Be careful using lemon on sensitive surfaces such as marble.)

2. Shine Your Coffee Pot

For the old diner trick to make glass coffee pots sparkle: Add ice, salt and lemon rinds to an empty coffee pot; swirl around for a minute or two, dump, and rinse well.

3. Clean Your Tea Kettle

For mineral deposit build up in tea kettles, fill the vessel with water and a handful of lemon peels and bring to a boil. Turn off heat and let sit for an hour, drain, and rinse well.

4. Dye Fabric

Pomegranate peels make for great coloring material. Use a stainless steel pot large enough to cover the fabric, fill with hot water and add peels, let it sit overnight. Simmer the water and peels the next day and then remove peels and add wet fabric. Simmer gently for one hour and allow to cool overnight. Remove the next day, rinse in cool water–from thereon, wash with similar colors.

5. Make Zest

If you’ve juiced lemons, limes, oranges, or grapefruit but don’t have an immediate need for zest, you can make it anyway and dry or freeze it for future use—zest is a versatile item to have on hand for a bright boost in any number of dishes. If you don’t have a microplane or zester, you can also use the small side of a box grater. Try to scrape just the outer layer, the white layer of pith is bitter. Freeze in an airtight container. To dry, spread the zest on a towel and leave until dried, then store in a clean jar.

6. Make Citrus Extract Powder

Make zest or twists (lemons, limes, oranges, or grapefruit) being sure to remove the pith–and allow to dry, about 3 or 4 days for twists, less for zest. Put in a blender (or spice grinder) and pulverize into a powder. Store in a clean jar.

7. Make Citrus Sugar

Make citrus extract powder and add it to sugar, or you can use fresh twists, put them in a jar with sugar, let the peel’s oil infuse the sugar and remove.

8. Make Lemon Pepper

Mix lemon extract powder with freshly cracked pepper.

9. Make Citrus Olive Oil

Pound citrus peel (pith removed) in a mortar and pestle with some oil added. Place in a jar with more oil and let rest for six hours. Strain into a clean jar.

10. Make Infusions

Infuse honey or vinegar with citrus peels by placing twists and letting the flavors seep. Strain the liquid and store in a clean jar.

11. Make Potato Crisps

Mix potato peels with enough lemon juice and olive oil to evenly coat. Spread the potato peels in a layer on a baking sheet and cook at 400 degrees, stirring once, until golden brown (about 10 minutes). Season to taste.

12. Make Stock
Boil potato peels, onion skins, carrot peels, leek ends, etc for vegetable stock. (Also save fresh herb stems for this!)

13. Boost Soup and Stock

Cheese rinds (sans wax) can be placed in soup stocks for an awesome secret boost of flavor and texture.

14. Add “Meat” to Greens

Cheese rinds can also be added to braised greens for added flavor depth.

15. Keep Brown Sugar Soft

If you regularly fall victim to the brick in the pantry known as hardened brown sugar, try adding some lemon peel (with traces of pulp and pith removed) to keep it moist and pliable.

16. Make Vanilla Sugar

If you use fresh vanilla, after scraping the bean, add the pod to sugar to make vanilla-infused sugar.

BEAUTY

17. Make a Banana Sugar Scrub

Sprinkle sugar on the flesh side of banana peels and use as a soft, exfoliating loofa. Rub gently all over your body and then rinse in the shower.

18. Refresh Your Face

For a skin tonic, rub orange or grapefruit peels on your face (avoiding your eyes) and then gently rinse with warm water.

19. Moisturize

Rub the fleshy part of an avocado peel on your face for a rich moisturizer.

20. Relieve Your Peepers

Potato peels can reduce puffiness around eyes; press the moist side of the fresh peels to the skin for 15 minutes.

Sometimes I wonder if people realize that the skin works alot like the liver to keep us healthy and free from toxicity. Did you know that when the skin is working optimally it eliminates upto 2 kgs of material per day? We are a civilization that believes putting some soap on our bodies is actually cleaning us. Well for this all we need to do is look back afew thousand years to the ancient Egyptians (known for their cleanliness and personal hygiene above all cultures) even the Greeks with their advancements and public bathing etc were dumbfounded at how clean and neat the Egyptians were. So what did they do? Well originally grains were distilled to make alcohol to clean the skin! Yes "vodka" essentially was invented to clean wounds and open up and clean the largest organ of the body "the skin". They would mix this alcohol with what we today call "bicarb soda" into a putty consistency and they would scrub the skin all over their bodies to kill all the acidic bacteria etc and to open the skin so it could function optimally. I have been sharing this of many processes for the last 5 years to thousands of people. Most of them can't believe how amazing their skin feels and looks after just afew sessions of this. Not to mention when going in the sun your body has the ability to make more Vit D and tends to tan easier and not burn. By simply adding coconut oil I have found many ozzies and others have been able to go out for hours in direct sun without burning. A good friend of mine on the Gold Coast Michael brown (red head & fair skin) would easily burn every time he went into the sun. He started this process religiously and now can go out for hours and has a great tan. This is important because petro chemicals in sunscreen actually cause skin cancer. And the more people that get skin cancer the more people use sunscreen it's a nasty cycle. So imagine how much your liver and kidneys and other organs will love you if your skin is eliminating the brunt of the toxicity that gets into our bodies from these modern times. So what do i do? Curing Endometriosis With Diet and Holistic Therapies Alone

Official statistics estimate that between 6-10% of women suffer from endometriosis, but from the size and selection of menstrual pain remedies at the pharmacy, it would seem likely that the numbers are much higher than that.

Endometriosis occurs when the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows and thrives beyond the uterine cavity.  The most common place for endometrial lesions to occur is the lining of the abdominal cavity, called the peritoneum.

Endometriosis

Women with endometriosis suffer most commonly from pelvic pain, especially during the menstrual cycle.  This pain can be debilitating and even threatening to health from excessive blood loss.

In addition to pain and bleeding sometimes all month long, endometriosis is also credited with as much as 50% of cases of infertility.

Other signs and symptoms of endometriosis include the following:

  • Pain before and during your period
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Fatigue, infertility, chronic pelvic pain not just during your period
  • Painful bowel movements, constipation, diarrhea, painful urination during your period
  • Heavy or irregular periods

When endometriosis involves the ovaries, tissue can grow and bleed over time forming what is called chocolate cysts.

Conventional Treatments?  Drugs and Surgery

Unfortunately, if a woman visits her gynecologist about symptoms or complications related to endometriosis, only medication to control the pain or surgery for severe cases is all that is typically recommended.

If infertility is the result of endometriosis and the woman wishes to get pregnant, expensive fertility treatments are the order of the day which don’t in any way resolve the problem and may actually worsen a woman’s hormonal balance over time causing other problems down the line.

Resolving Endometriosis Wtih Diet and Non-Toxic Therapies

Fortunately, there is growing recognition that the pain and inflammation which characterizes endometriosis can be improved dramatically or even resolved completely with diet.

I myself suffered from endometriosis starting when I was a teenager and diet change alone with no other treatments whatsoever completely resolved the problem.  I’ve been in complete remission now for well over 10 years.

If you are also experiencing symptoms of endometriosis, whether the problems are new to you or longstanding, there is hope with diet change combined with holistic therapies as needed.

Kim Schuette, CN and Certified GAPS Practitioner and owner of the clinic Biodynamic Wellness in Solana Beach, California reports that the following dietary changes have proven to be very helpful to women battling endometriosis:

Gemmotherapy is a therapeutic modality using stem cell extracts of fresh buds, shoots, roots or stems from embryonic or mature plants.  This therapy is helpful for tissue regeneration, positive growth development and drainage of toxins.   Rubus idaeus is derived from the shoots of the red raspberry bush and is a very effective remedy for drainage of the uterus and pelvic region.  It also tonifies the uterus.

  • Coffee enemas can be a helpful addition to the process as needed.

Marvellous Mung Bean – from toxins to acne

In China, mung beans are very popular to eat especially in the hot summer months.  Most families in China eat mung beans and use them widely in different recipes, such as mung bean noodles, mung bean cake, mung bean rice, mung bean soup, mung bean desserts and even mung bean wine. They are also commonly sprouted to make bean sprouts.  Mung bean soup is an extremely popular family dish in China during summer.

1. Health Benefits of Mung Beans

A very famous Chinese herbal pharmacist, Li Shi Zhen, stated in his book, Ben Cao Gang Mu, that “mung beans are highly recommended not only as a rich source of nutrients but also as medication” and described that mung beans can help to clear heat and toxins from the body, balance the organs and skin, and tonify Qi.  Mung beans also improve circulation in the twelve meridian channels throughout the body.

i) Clear Heat & Prevent Heat-stroke

Chinese Medicine believes that the external environment has a strong influence on the body.  For example, in a hot summer the body will absorb more heat from its external environment.  If the body cannot release this heat, physical changes may occur, including: body will feel hot, red face, very thirsty, dry skin, constipation, lack of energy, headache, dizziness.

For the hot seasons, Traditional Chinese Medicine recommends foods that are cooling in nature, can balance the body’s Yin & Yang and can release the heat.  These types of foods should be a part of the daily diet during the summer.

Drinking mung bean soup more than once a day is extremely beneficial in reducing the above symptoms.  Upon cooking the mung bean soup it is best kept refrigerated which preserves the dish and also helps to increase its effects.  Drinking two or three cups a day of this soup will help to release the  summer heat as well as preventing the symptoms above.

ii) Clear Skin & Help Acne

Mung beans are sweet in taste and cooling in nature.  One of the very old traditional Chinese books, Kai Bao Ben Cao, mentions that mung beans act more on the Heart channel and clear heat and toxins from the skin, and cool heat in the blood.  Therefore, mung beans can help acne and other skin symptoms, such as the common skin rash, cold sores, mouth ulcers, pimples and boils.  To help these conditions, mung bean soup should be thick in consistency and at room temperature – see the recipe below.

iii) Clear Toxins from the Blood & Body

Modern science now also considers that mung beans can help clear toxins from the body, including environmental toxins and chemicals.

2. Recipes

i) Mung Bean Soup – for skin conditions

2 handfuls of mung beans
4 cups of water

Boil for 3 minutes, remove from heat & cover saucepan with lid.  Allow to soak in boiled water for 30 minutes then strain.

Drink the thick liquid soup.

This process can be repeated once again using the same batch of mung beans.

Effects of this dish: Clear skin heat; reduce acne & other skin complaints as mentioned above.

Drink one cup of this soup twice a day in conjunction with regular treatment.  Have 2 days break from the soup every 5 days.

ii) Mung Bean Soup – for summer (hot weather conditions)

Boil 2 handfuls of mung beans
7 cups of water

Boil for 15 minutes on low heat.  Set the soup aside to cool (it can even be refrigerated).  Drink this thin soup as required.  The beans can also be eaten if soft enough.

Effects of this dish: Clear body heat, prevent heat attack from the hot season.

3. Precautions

i) Avoid eating mung beans if you have diarrhoea or cold hands and feet.

ii) If you are unsure whether or not mung beans are suitable for you, consult your experienced Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner.

Adding LIFE to your years and years to your life!

I had the most amazing experience yesterday to be the guest of Paul Gautschi at his garden in Sequim, Wa.  Paul is the gardener behind the film Back to Eden, which you can find at www.backtoedenfilm.com.  The food coming out of his garden is spectacular and the taste is beyond this world.

 

 

Everything was sweet.  We first tasted some Kale (from last year!!!) that was starting to flower.  He broke off some tops for us and said to try it.  I was amazed how sweet and moist it was.  I gobbled up a ton more.  His spinach as picture perfect, like from a food blog photo shoot.  Green and shiny and huge for only being weeks old.  Again, sweet.  What amazed me the most was the asparagus.  Just pick off a shoot and chow down the sweetest, most tender asparagus I’ve ever had.  His food would make eating raw soooooo easy!!!  I can’t even stand to think about the fact I’ll have to eat farmers market food until my garden is bigger.  It was that good.  You could feel the health pouring out of it.  Strawberries that were surreal, and his fruit trees………….so loaded with fruit in the past that the branches hang down permanently.  He has to prune them back so they don’t produce so much as he can’t give it all away.  His chickens were like sent from heaven.  Big and lovely colors and they were so happy.  They would scratch big holes in the earth and roll around in them like a dog at the beach.  I had been at  a friends house earlier in the day and his chickens looked sick next to these beauties.

And here’s the deal…………….he does this all with little work, no watering, no feed for the poultry, no additives to the ground, NOTHING!!!!   You can watch about how he grows his food (my new way this year too!) in the film and it’s fascinating.  The chickens eat all the scraps from the house and garden.  The break it all up in their pen and turn it into the most beautiful compost I’ve ever seen, and it doesn’t stink at all.  He gets 2 dozen eggs a day and feels that is just a bonus to having the best composters right in his backyard.

 

This was just the best day ever and I encourage everyone to watch the film and seriously consider how you grow your food.  Paul loves to give tours of his garden and he is the nicest man in the world.  I feel so privileged to have spent this day with him.

These days, we’ve got so much more medicine, but so much less health. More children are suffering from needless obesity and the three top killers, heart disease, cancer and diabetes, are on the rise! Something’s got to change!

Before things can change with the state of human health on this planet, we all have to realize that just as the earth has an external environment that has to be kept clean and clear for fresh air and pure water, each of us has an internal environment that must also be kept clean and clear. We have internal rivers and streams, veins, arteries and lymphatic vessels running through our bodies that must also be kept running pure, the state of which are vital to optimum health and strength.

The blood, tissues and organs of our bodies are kept in a delicate state of pH balance which is set as alkaline at 7.365

 Many of you already know that a fish aquarium must be kept at a proper pH or the fish will die. Think of all of the cells in your body as being suspended in your own body “ocean”. The health of your cells will be determined by the environment they swim in. Those of you who enjoy your own swimming pools and hot tubs must also check the pH of the water to maintain its clean quality where bacteria cannot grow.  Just as your internal body temperature is held at 98.6, you are engineered to be alkaline by design at 7.365 and acidic by function.

(Quick review for those of you who haven’t taken chemistry in decades: the pH Scale goes from 1 to 14 – 7 being neutral. Anything below 7 is acid, and anything above 7 is base or alkaline.)

All body functions – respiration, perspiration, urination and defecation – create acids that must be handled and discarded by the body. If the acids are not discarded, toxicity (acidity) will build up in the internal environment. When your body temperature changes (rises above or falls below 98.6), it is actually a sign that something is wrong. If your body pH changes, symptoms can occur.

The blood is strictly held at its alkaline pH by keeping mineral salts balanced in the blood. Acids that build up can be held in the connective tissues and other body tissues such as the skin, muscles and organs. These acids can result in degeneration and dis-ease. What we eat and drink contributes to the system which keeps the body in a state of pH balance. Once you learn more about your body chemistry, you can make the adjustments toward optimum health and vitality.

Hydrate Your Way To Health

The water you drink plays a crucial role in maintaining the body’s internal pH balance. You may have noticed water bottles with their pH listed right on the bottle. This is because pH MATTERS!

There is acidic water and alkaline water. The important thing is to drink water that is close to your own blood pH or even higher. Most water has a pH of around 9. It takes 20 parts alkalinity (sodium bicarbonate) to neutralize 1 part acidity (carbonic acid) in the body. You can’t over alkalize, but you can become overly acidic quite easily. Most people who eat the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) with its acidic foods and drinks become sick and tired. Signs that one is over-acidic include:

  • pain and inflammation
  • retention of water
  • skin rashes and eruptions
  • fatigue and allergies
  • More serious diagnoses could include cancer, diabetes, lupus, and heart disease, just to name a few

Hydration is the single most important thing you can do to start your alkalizing regime. A good rule is to drink one liter of pH water for every 30lbs of body weight.

Water ionizers can be connected to your kitchen sink to make all your drinking water alkaline. They also make acid water which can be used for external cleaning purposes (floors and counters). There are also drops made by health companies which use mineral salts such as Sodium Chlorite that can be added to any drinking water to push the pH up over a 9 while adding nacient oxygen to the water, too.

BACTERIA CAN’T LIVE IN AN OXYGEN-RICH ENVIRONMENT
