Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a type of staph bacteria that’s become

resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary staph infections.

Most MRSA infections occur in people who’ve been in hospitals or other health care settings, such as nursing homes and dialysis centers.

When it occurs in these settings, it’s known as health care-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA). HA-MRSA infections typically

are associated with invasive procedures or devices, such as surgeries, intravenous tubing or artificial joints.

 Another type of MRSA infection has occurred in the wider community — among healthy people.

This form, community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA), often begins as a painful skin boil.

It’s spread by skin-to-skin contact. At-risk populations include groups such as high school wrestlers, child care workers and people who live in crowded conditions.

Knowing that hospital-acquired MRSA infections kill between 15,000 and 19,000 patients a year, wouldn’t you feel safer going into a hospital that uses wall and ceiling panels coated with MRSA-killing antimicrobial silver nanoparticles?

According to the June 2015 issue of Silver News, a German company called Lamilux has invented wall panels coated with silver nanoparticles.

The fiber-reinforced plastic wall panels can easily be installed on the walls of hospital operating rooms, similar to the way tiles are laid on a floor.

The goal is to help prevent MRSA growth and other forms of bacterial contamination, which are common in operating rooms and which infect up to 94,000 hospital patients every year. News sources claim approximately 20% of the MRSA infections that go blood-borne result in the deaths of the patients, meaning these new panels have the potential to help stop approximately 18,000 hospital-caused deaths every year.

Clinical Trials in Germany

According to the Silver News, the new panels (i.e., wall tiles) are now undergoing clinical trials in Germany to see how effective they are. They wrote:

“Lamilux Composites GmbH of Rehau, Germany, is offering a fiber-reinforced plastic material with a nanosilver coating that company officials say mitigates germs within a few hours.

Initially developed as a wall coating for hospital operating rooms, the company’s AntiBac product was developed with Rent-a-Scientist, a Regensburg-based company that specializes in nanosilver research.

With the rise of multi-resistant germs in hospitals, sometimes lethal to patients, Lamilux officials note that one in particular — methycillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA — appears regularly in operating rooms and can cause wound infections and respiratory inflammation that can lead to death. MRSA is resistant to many drugs.

In addition to clinical use, AntiBac can be used in the food industry in refrigerated warehouses, cold stores and refrigerated vehicles as well as in processing areas and slaughter houses, according to company officials.

The new composite is being tested at the Asklepios Clinic in Bad Abbach, Germany, where some parts of operating room walls have been covered with the anti-bacterial panels.”

The Lamilux company website claims the silver-coated panels represent, “…a new technologically-advanced composite material: a fibre-reinforced plastic, on the surface of which a nanosilver coating gives it an antibacterial effect and kills germs within just a few hours.”

Lamilux goes on to explain the reason for the development of the new silver-coated panels:

“Multi-resistant germs pose a major threat in hospitals and could be fatal for patients.

Clinics therefore permanently face the challenge of preventing the occurrence of dangerous hospital germs with targeted preventive and emergency hygiene measures.

…The new antibacterial LAMILUX material can in the future be used as wall and ceiling panels…it has been scientifically proven that dangerous germs die within a few hours.

In addition to clinical use, there are also numerous areas of application for the high-tech material, mainly in the food industry, where high hygiene standards need to be maintained and sterility is paramount.

…The material is being trialed in practice at the Asklepios Clinic in Bad Abbach, Germany. In some parts of the operating room, the walls have been covered with the anti-infective panels.”

According to the Colloidal Silver Cures MRSA website, “…hospitals in Britain have been testing pajamas and bed linen made of a special fabric that is impregnated with silver, as a means of stopping the spread of MRSA dead in its tracks…Over the course of the next year, the specially created fabrics are being used at the Lister Hospital in the city of Stevenage, in Hertfordshire, England.”

Says Dr. Peter Wilson, a consulting microbiologist for the above hospital, “A successful trial would transform the way we tackle certain infections, particularly MRSA…Silver is known to be a very efficient agent against infection and also very safe. These trials will mean we can prove its effectiveness.”

The Colloidal Silver Cures MRSA website also points out that according to the British newspaper, The Sun, “…a $250,000 machine has been developed to spray a special aerosol silver mist throughout British hospitals, in order to stop the spread of the deadly MRSA super pathogens.”

 

 

The Sun newspaper went on to state:

“Experts have long known silver is deadly to the superbug and is highly toxic to some other bacteria as well.

It is already used in plasters and hospital dressings. But now medics from Leicester University have created a generator that divides pieces of silver into billions of tiny particles.

It then suspends them in liquid glycerol to be put into aerosols. The particles are small enough to pass inside bacteria but do not kill human cells.

 

 

The $250,000 machine’s inventor, Professor Chris Binns, said medical trials will start within the year. He also believes the silver ‘bullets’ produced by his machine could be used to fight HIV.”

Figure 1.4 shows MRSA rates for the United States and other high- and middle-income countries for 2004. In Europe, only Romania and Malta had higher rates of MRSA than the United States in that year. MRSA levels were high in East Asia, specifically South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, probably because of high levels of antibiotic use, but not much higher than for the United States. In the Americas, only Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia had a higher MRSA prevalence than the United States.

Note: These statistics are more than likely much higher if you compare different statistics from around the world. These were about the average worldwide. But, be assured that this is a worldwide problem that is not going to go away until this antibiotic resistance  bacteria is wiped out.

The frivolous use of antibiotics, not just in medicine but also in food production, is the root cause of skyrocketing antibiotic resistance.

Data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control1 (ECDC) shows a significant rise of resistance to multiple antibiotics in Klebsiella pneumoniae and E. coli in just the last four years alone, affecting more than one-third of the EU, and the primary cause for this man-made epidemic is the widespread misuse of antibiotics.

Between the years of 1993 and 2005, the number of Americans hospitalized due to the antibiotic-resistant “superbug” MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) skyrocketed from about 2,000 to 370,000.

Currently, MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant infections kill about 60,000 Americans annually, and account for billions of dollars in health care costs.2Antibiotic-resistant disease is not the only danger associated with the misuse of these drugs. Excessive exposure to antibiotics also takes a heavy toll on your gastrointestinal health, which can predispose you to virtually any disease.

Abnormal gut flora may actually be a major contributing factor to the rise in a wide variety of childhood diseases and ailments, from bowel disorders and allergies toautism.

Agricultural uses of antibiotics account for about 80 percent of all antibiotic usein the US,3 so it’s a MAJOR source of human antibiotic consumption. Animals are often fed antibiotics at low doses for disease prevention and growth promotion, and those antibiotics are transferred to you via meat, and even via the manure used as crop fertilizer.

Gut Viruses Confer Antibiotic-Resistance to Bacteria, New Research Shows

When used properly, in the correct contexts and with responsibility, antibiotics can and do save lives that are threatened by bacterial infections. But there is one important variable that wasn’t considered when the widespread use of these “miracle medicines” began, and that is that bacteria are highly adaptable.

They are clearly capable of outsmarting antibiotics, and they are doing so with a vengeance. According to the CDC’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System:4

“Antibiotics kill or inhibit the growth of susceptible bacteria. Sometimes one of the bacteria survives because it has the ability to neutralize or evade the effect of the antibiotic; that one bacteria can then multiply and replace all the bacteria that were killed off.

Exposure to antibiotics therefore provides selective pressure, which makes the surviving bacteria more likely to be resistant. In addition, bacteria that were at one time susceptible to an antibiotic can acquire resistance through mutation of their genetic material or by acquiring pieces of DNA that code for the resistance properties from other bacteria.

The DNA that codes for resistance can be grouped in a single easily transferable package. This means that bacteria can become resistant to many antimicrobial agents because of the transfer of one piece of DNA.”

Interestingly, these bacteria have previously unknown allies that supply them with the antibiotic-resistant genes necessary for their survival. Researchers at the Wyss Institute have discovered that gut viruses known as bacteriophages, a.k.a. “phages” are actually instrumental in conferring antibacterial resistance to bacteria.56 Most importantly:

“[Phage] deliver genes that help the bacteria to survive not just the antibiotic they’ve been exposed to, but other types of antibiotics as well…

That suggests that phages in the gut may be partly responsible for the emergence of dangerous superbugs that withstand multiple antibiotics, and that drug targeting of phages could offer a potential new path to mitigate development of antibiotic resistance,” the Institute’s press release7states.

Phages Are Actually an Important Part of Your Body’s Defense System

More than 90 percent of the DNA in your body is not yours, but actually belongs to a wide variety of microbes, and these findings just go to show how intricately tied your health is to the microorganisms that live inside you. And, while the word “virus” brings to mind all things “bad” for you, this is not necessarily true.

Another recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences8 found that many of these viruses (phages) actually serve as immune helpers—not enemies—and form an important part of your body’s defense system.9

Wherever bacteria reside, you will also find phages, because phages depend on bacteria for their survival. Phages specialize in breaking open and killing certain kinds of bacteria, hijacking them in order to replicate.

Most phages have hollow heads, which store their DNA and RNA, and tunnel tails designed for binding to the surface of their bacterial targets. According to phages.org, once a phage has attached itself to a bacterium:

“The viral DNA is then injected through the tail into the host cell, where it directs the production of progeny phages, often over a hundred in half an hour. These ‘young’ phages burst from the host cell (killing it) and infect more bacteria.”

The researchers found evidence that these phages partner with animals and humans to stave off bacterial infections and control the composition of friendly microbes in your body. The researchers speculate that some phages might protect bacteria that benefit their hosts (i.e. you), while destroying those that cause harm.

Which brings us back to the featured research, which suggests that these phages may also play a significant role in the rapid rise of antibiotic resistance… In essence, it would appear our zealous overuse of antibiotic drugs is causing these helpful viruses to boost the survivability of bacteria during the onslaught of a deadly foe—the antibiotic—only in this case, the end result is disastrous rather than helpful for the host… On the upside, these findings may confer new hope for effective treatments. According to Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D., Founding Director of the Wyss Institute:10

“Antibiotic resistance is as pressing a global health problem as they come, and to fight it, it’s critical to understand it. [These] novel findings offer a previously unknown way to approach this problem — by targeting the phage that live in our intestine, rather than the pathogens themselves.”

Colloidal Silver Dramatically Boosts Effectiveness of Antibiotics

The use of silver in the battle against pathogenic bacteria goes way back into antiquity. Hippocrates was one of the first to describe its antimicrobial properties in 400 B.C. Over the past few years, several studies have demonstrated the fact that silveris indeed one of the most effective agents in the battle against antibiotic-resistant super pathogens. Yet conventional medicine has largely dismissed such claims, relegating colloidal silver to the “woo-woo” section of medical myth.

The addition of silver also broadened the effect of vancomycin, an antibiotic that is usually only effective at killing Gram-positive bacteria like Staph and Strep; aided by silver it killed Gram-negative bacteria such as those that cause food poisoning and dangerous hospital-acquired infections.”

For example, by adding a small amount of silver to the antibiotic, a powerful synergism occurred, and a urinary tract infection caused by tetracycline-resistant E. coli was successfully eradicated. Silver also helped save the lives of 90 percent of mice suffering with a life-threatening abdominal inflammation by adding it to the antibiotic vanomycin. In the group receiving vanomycin only, a mere 10 percent survived. The researchers discovered two mechanisms that help explain how silver can boost the effectiveness of an antibiotic:

  • Silver interferes with the bacteria’s metabolism, increasing production of reactive oxygen species14 (ROS); products of normal oxygen consuming metabolic processes in your body that, in excess, can damage cell membranes and DNA. Many antibiotics are believed to kill bacteria by producing ROS compounds, and here, the researchers found that adding a small amount of silver boosted the antibiotic’s ability to kill anywhere from 10 and 1,000 times more bacteria
  • Silver makes the bacteria’s cell membrane more permeable. This may explain the beneficial effect of silver on gram-negative bacteria, the cells of which are often impenetrable to antibiotics due to the molecular size of the drugs

What About Potential Toxicity of Colloidal Silver?

As for toxicity, the researchers found that the doses of silver required were far smaller than the dose needed to harm either mice or cultured human cells, suggesting that oral and injectable silver should be quite safe. That said, quality is extremely important, as misrepresentation of colloidal silver by less scrupulous manufacturers has in the past led to some of its more negative connotations. According to a Commercial Product Report15 by silver-colloids.com, a site that provides detailed laboratory analyses of colloidal silver products, there are three distinctly different types of silver products on the market that are all labeled and sold as “colloidal” silver:

  • True colloidal silver
  • Ionic silver
  • Silver protein: Due to the high concentration of large silver particles, silver protein products are known to cause argyria, which turns your skin blue-gray color.

When purchasing colloidal silver, it’s very important to avoid silver protein formulas. True colloidal silver seems to be the most recommended, but ionic silver could probably also be used. In the featured study, they used ionic silver (Ag) in a silver nitrate salt (AgNO3), which, again, was found to be quite non-toxic in animals and human cell cultures. Substantial antimicrobial activity was found at 30 microns (μM) against E. coli. If you take ionic silver products according to the manufacturer’s recommended dosage, ionic silver will not cause argyria. That said, since there are potential health risks involved if you select the wrong formula, I recommend you use colloidal silver only under the guidance and supervision of a qualified alternative health practitioner who can help you select a high-quality product.

Statin Users Beware… Your Cholesterol Medication May Not Mix Well with Antibiotics!

In related news, Canadian researchers16 warn that patients —especially the elderly—taking cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Lipitor, should avoid the antibiotics clarithromycin and erythromycin, as these antibiotics inhibit the metabolism of statins. Increased drug concentrations in your body may cause muscle or kidney damage, and even death. As reported by WebMD:17

“‘These drugs do interact and cause difficulties for patients,’ said lead researcher Dr. Amit Garg, a professor in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. These adverse reactions are rare, Garg added. ‘Most people will be fine,’ he said. ‘But at a population level, hundreds of preventable hospitalizations are occurring.’ For someone taking a statin, the study suggests that substituting a different antibiotic — azithromycin — is safer because it doesn’t interfere with the metabolism of statins. Another strategy is to stop the statin until the antibiotic course is finished, Garg said.”

What You Can Do to Help Stop the Spread of Antibiotic-Resistant Disease

You can help yourself and your community by using antibiotics only when absolutely necessary and by purchasing organic, antibiotic-free meats and other foods. Even though the problem of antibiotic resistance needs to be stemmed through public policy on a nationwide level, the more people who get involved on a personal level to stop unnecessary antibiotic use the better.

Remember, not every bacterial infection needs to be treated with a drug. First, as an all-around preventive measure, you’ll want to make sure your vitamin D level is optimized year-round, especially during pregnancy, along with vitamin K2. But there are also a number of natural compounds that can help boost your immune system function to help rid you of an infection, including:

  • Oregano (oil of oregano)
  • Garlic
  • Echinacea
  • Manuka honey (for topical application)

Last but not least, the use of silver compounds appears to bring new hope against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Still, creating more potent antibiotics, regardless of how that’s achieved, will not help us in the long run unless we also address the root causes of antibiotic resistance, which is rampant overuse—in medicine, but perhaps even more importantly, in agriculture.

Only a few short weeks ago I reported that as much as 14% of the U.S. meat supply has become contaminated with the deadly MRSA pathogen. Now researchers writing in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases say the figure is closer to 50%!  Can colloidal silver help protect you and your family?  You bet it can!  Here’s what you need to know right now…

What’s lurking in the meat you’re buying for your family?

Plenty of disease-causing bacteria, according to a new study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Almost HALF of all the beef, chicken, pork, and turkey bought in five U.S. cities and sampled by researchers, was found to contain drug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA, reports CBS News.

That’s up from only 14% in studies conducted late last year.  In other words, the problem with MRSA contaminated meats is growing by leaps and bounds!

Each year, MRSA kills more people in the U.S. than AIDs.  Hospitals now take extraordinary precautions to prevent its spread in surgical wards.  Schools in a number of states have been closed to stop its spread.  Even football games have been postponed when players have become infected.  So its spread into the U.S. food supply is extremely problematic.

According to YahooNews.com:

In the new nationwide study, researchers analyzed 136 samples of 80 brands of beef, chicken, pork and turkey purchased at 26 retail stores in five cities: Chicago; Flagstaff, Ariz.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Los Angeles; and Washington, D.C.

The results showed that 47 percent of the samples were contaminated with S. aureus, and that 52 percent of the bacteria were resistant to at least three classes of antibiotics.

DNA testing suggests that the food animals themselves were the major source of contamination with S. aureus, said the researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix.

The study was published in the April 15issue of the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

“For the first time, we know how much of our meat and poultry is contaminated with antibiotic-resistant Staph, and it is substantial,” said study senior author Lance B. Price, director of TGen’s Center for Food Microbiology and Environmental Health.

“The fact that drug-resistant S. aureus was so prevalent, and likely came from the food animals themselves, is troubling, and demands attention to how antibiotics are used in food-animal production today,” he added.

Even though cooking kills the pathogen, it is easily spread during the food preparation process.  This makes it critical to clean cutting boards, kitchen countertops, food preparation utensils and anything else the meat may have come into contact with (including your hands) with a powerful disinfectant like colloidal silver.

More importantly, you need to have colloidal silver on hand in case you or a family member comes down with a potentially deadly MRSA infection.

Does Colloidal Silver Really Kill MRSA?

Thankfully, numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of colloidal silver against the MRSA pathogen.

Let me briefly summarize just four of those studies for you now. You may have seen some of this information in previous ezines I’ve sent, but at this point in time it’s critical to understand how truly effective colloidal silver is against MRSA:

Case #1: A Brigham-Young Clinical Study Proves Silver Kills MRSA – In this study, conducted quietly in October 2006 at the Department of Microbiology/Molecular Biology of Brigham-Young University, and published in the journal Current Science, Vol. 91, No. 7, October 10, 2006, it was found that a number of the antibiotic drugs which formerly killed MDR (multiple drug-resistant) pathogens such as MRSA could actually be restored to full efficacy against the deadly pathogens, but only if a colloidal silver solution was used in conjunction with the drug!

Since these antibiotic drugs had previously lost their effectiveness against the super pathogens, this study clearly demonstrated that the silver was the deciding factor in the deaths of the deadly drug-resistant pathogens!

Case #2: Iranian Clinical Study Proves Silver Increases Effectiveness of Antibiotic Drugs Against Staph – This study, called “Synthesis and effect of silver nanoparticles on the antibacterial activity of different antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.” was conducted by the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Medical Nanotechnology Research Center, Faculty of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences at the University of Tehran, Iran. It demonstrated that the addition of silver to three specific antibiotics (vancomycin, amoxicillin and penicillin) almost magically renews their effectiveness against today’s most deadly pathogens, including MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus).

Say what you will about the Iranians, but when they do a medical study, they do it up right. Apparently Iranian scientists were two full months ahead of the Brigham-Young team I mentioned in Case #1 above in proving that the addition of silver particles to antibiotic drugs boosts their ability to kill resistant staphylococcus aureaus – the MRSA pathogen.

Case #3: Taiwanese Clinical Study Proves Colloidal Silver By Itself Kills MRSA – Another study, this one conducted by the Department of Textile Science, Nanya Institute of Technology, Chung-Li, Tao-Yuan, Taiwan and published in the journal Colloids Surface B Biointerfaces in October 2007, also demonstrated that silver colloids kill both MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, another deadly and extremely opportunistic superbug. In this study, a special colloidal silver solution was tested on contact surfaces where the deadly pathogens are known to colonize, and from which they can spread to humans. The silver solution proved to be completely effective against both the MRSA and Pseudomonas super pathogens!

Case #4: Czech Clinical Study Proves Silver Particles Kill MRSA – This study was conducted at the Department of Physical Chemistry at Palacky University in the Czech Republic. It was later published in the prestigious Journal of Physical Chemistry B in August 2006. Titled “Silver colloidal nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and their antibacterial activity,” the study demonstrated that “…silver particles with a narrow size distribution with an average size of 25 nm showed high antimicrobial and bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including multi-resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).”

Drug Resistant Bacteria – MRSA – A Blessing In Disguise!

I have been watching with some horror, as I know you may have, the development of the epidemic of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) in hospitals, churches, and public schools. MRSA is now ONLY susceptible to Vancomycin, the antibiotic of last resort. And, soon Vancomycin will cease to be effective through overuse.

The Human Race has medicated itself into a real chance of extinction. However, we have culturally inactivated this defense mechanism with our modern commercial diets of refined sugars, carbonated beverages, meats, dairy products and our ever increasing acidic atmosphere.

So, now the human race is totally vulnerable to collapse from acid rain from within. With the body’s own pH defense system disabled, and acidic antibiotics no longer working against increasing numbers of micro-organisms, has modern medicine become the architect of our demise as a species?

BUT. . .

Maybe MRSA, and other non-susceptible, micro-organisms are a BLESSING IN DISGUISE!

It’s a terrible thing to say, I know, but frequently it takes terrible tragedies for societies to “wake up” and correct known problems. This seems to be the Rule rather than the exception.
