Colloidal Silver Health Benefits and Uses Title

If you haven’t heard of colloidal silver, you will soon enough if you’re on the lookout for alternative therapies to common health issues, such as a sinus infection or a cold.

Grab Your Guide For The Top 8 Proven Colloidal Silver Benefits

Most health food stores and pharmacies stock several brands of colloidal silver, and, of course, you can find a find a vast amount of information about colloidal silver benefits on the Internet. Unfortunately, the information out there is confusing as many sources have conflicting opinions.

On one hand, you’ll run across thousands of personal testimonials about colloidal silver helping people with practically every disease you’ve heard about. You will also stumble upon some well-known health sites that warn consumers about safety concerns. (1) Usually, these sources quote a statement made by the FDA in 1999 claiming that there is no scientific evidence to support the use of colloidal silver. (2)

This type of information can confuse even the most savvy natural health enthusiast, which is why I want to lend a helping hand and provide some evidenced-based information to help you make an informed choice.

How Colloidal Silver Benefits Work

According to a report written by Richard Davies and Samuel Etris of The Silver Institute in a 1996, there are three primary ways that colloidal silver can help heal the body: (3)

  1. Catalytic Oxidation: Silver naturally holds onto oxygen molecules, which readily react with the sulfhydral (H) groups that surround bacterial and viruses. In turn, this helps block the life-preserving cellular process known as cellular respiration, which is defined as “the set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release waste products.” (4)
  2. Reaction with Bacterial Cell Membranes: Silver ions can attach to bacteria cell membranes directly and produce the same respiration-blocking effect.
  3. Binding with DNA: Shown to literally enter bacteria DNA, up to 12% of silver has been detected in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. According to one source, “While it remains unclear exactly how the silver binds to the DNA without destroying the hydrogen bonds holding the lattice together, it nevertheless prevents the DNA from unwinding, an essential step for cellular replication to occur.” (5)

Top 8 Proven Colloidal Silver Benefits

By having a direct effect on cellular respiration, colloidal silver benefits the body in numerous ways. There are, however, eight proven healing properties that I consider to be particularly supported by the medical literature.

1. Antibacterial

First, colloidal silver’s ability to control antibiotic-resistant superbugs is astonishing. While employed at UCLA Medical School in the 1980s, Larry C. Ford, MD, documented over 650 different disease-causing pathogens that were destroyed in minutes when exposed to small amounts of silver. (6)

Colloidal silver, unlike its modern prescription antibiotic counterpart, simply doesn’t create resistance or immunity in the organisms that are killed by it. This point cannot be emphasized enough, especially in light of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reporting that more than 2 million people in the U.S. suffer illness every year as a result of antibiotic-resistant infections and 23,000 die from these infections. (7)

2. Wound Care/Skin Health

Robert O. Becker, MD, says that colloidal silver stimulates healing in the skin and other soft tissues. (8) In a research article produced by Pharmacognosy Communications in 2012, it was specifically recommended that certain colloidal silver preparations should be considered for topical use to treat burns, thrush, periodontitis and other conditions. (9)

For instance, you can treat ringworm (Tinea capitis) at home with colloidal silver because it’s a potent anti-fungal. Caused by a fungus that lives on the top layer of the skin, ringworm presents as round, scaly patches. It’s contagious and spread by skin contact and by contaminated materials, such as clothing.

Colloidal silver benefits many skins conditions such as psoriasis and eczema as well. It’s soothing to scrapes and even repairs tissue damage from burns.

3. Pink Eye/Ear Infections

Pink eye is an inflamed mucous membrane that covers the eyeball and eyelid lining, and it’s primarily caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Colloidal silver can be used for prompt action against this irritating and highly infectious virus and bacteria.

When applied on the infected eye, the tiny silver colloids pick up the infected cells by attracting them electromagnetically and sending them into the bloodstream to be eliminated.

Our modern prescription antibiotic drugs are designed to work against specific classes of bacteria, but ear infections may be caused by multiple classes of bacteria or can even be fungal.

In this case, the prescription antibiotic will be useless, whereas colloidal silver is effective regardless of what may be causing your infection.

4. Antiviral

Colloidal silver benefits can be experienced as an anti-viral for HIV/AIDS, pneumonia, herpes, shingles and warts. Dr. Martin Hum, from the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, lists colloidal silver as one of the natural remedies to stop viruses fast. (10)

Colloidal silver suffocates the virus and can even reduce the activity of the HIV virus in AIDS patients. There are also numerous anecdotal accounts of colloidal silver’s efficacy against the hepatitis C virus.

5. Anti-Inflammatory

Colloidal silver is also a fantastic anti-inflammatory remedy. Case in point: Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) studied the effects of inflammation after being treated by colloidal silver; they found that the inflamed skin of pigs treated with silver experienced near-normal skin after 72 hours, while other treatment groups not treated with silver remained inflamed. (11)

Research is beginning to reflect what many people have already known anecdotally for years — that colloidal silver can reduce swelling, speed healing, and boosts cell recovery!

6. Sinusitis

Widely used to control sinus infections, colloidal silver can benefit people as a nasal spray, according to a study published in the International Forum for Allergy and Rhinology last year. (14)

Specifically shown to kill Staph aureus, you can add a few drops of silver in a “neti pot” or by applying directly into your nasal cavity and letting it drain down your throat by tilting your head back.

Also, it’s important to point out that recent research indicates that hidden infections by pathogens could be a cause of respiratory inflammation associated with common allergies and asthma. Colloidal silver destroys Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, which may be the reason why airborne allergy sufferers often find such dramatic relief from colloidal silver.

7. Cold/Flu

Some claim that colloidal silver helps prevent all types of flu, including swine flu, as well as the common cold. (15)

Few studies have been done to test this clinically, but in 2011 the NIH took 100 children under the age of 12 suffering from the common cold and nasal congestion and assigned them into two groups; the first group was treated with a solution of colloidal silver and beta glucan, and the second group with saline solution. Even though both groups benefited from the treatment, 90% of the people in the colloidal silver group completely recovered! (16)

8. Pneumonia

Our modern drugs have become limited in their efficacy when it comes to fighting bronchitis or pneumonia. Typically, antibiotics are administered as the first line of defense, but when the pneumonia is viral, antibiotics won’t help in the least. The nice thing about colloidal silver is that it can help regardless of the pathogen.

Colloidal silver is a remarkable product to help fight against bronchitis and pneumonia when ingested internally, but an even more effective way to utilize it? Simply breathe it into your lungs.

This way, the silver directly contacts the germs residing in the lungs, which are causing bronchitis or pneumonia. It’s basically the same thing as using respiratory support, and it works speedily, clearing it up within a couple of days.

Now, the most effective method to get the colloidal silver into the lungs is to use a nebulizer. Generally, use one teaspoon approximately three times a day for 10 to 15 minutes.

What is Colloidal Silver?

Before the invention of the refrigerator, it was common practice to drop a silver coin into a container of milk as a preservative because silver was known to prevent the growth of algae, bacteria and other undesirable organisms.

Dating back to ancient times, silver was also a popular remedy to stop the spread of diseases. Its use as a natural antibiotic continued all the way until the 1940s, when modern antibiotics arrived.

Today, obviously, people don’t need to drop silver coins into their water to experience colloidal silver benefits! All you need to do is carefully take a few drops from a bottle that you buy at the store, which is:

A solution of water containing nanometre sized particles of suspended silver. The total silver content is expressed as milligrams of silver per litre (mg/L) of water which is numerically the same as parts per million (ppm). The total silver content is divided into two forms of silver: ionic silver and silver particles. (3)

There are basically three types of products that are marketed as “colloidal silver” and these can be categorized as:

  • Ionic silver solutions
  • Silver protein
  • True colloidal silver

Ionic silver –

Ionic silver solutions are products whose silver content primarily consists of silver ions. Although ionic silver is often marketed as colloidal silver, it’s not true colloidal silver. Because it’s the least expensive to produce, ionic silver is the most popular product in this category. The problem? It simply won’t produce the same benefits that true colloidal silver can.

Silver Protein –

In order to keep large silver particles suspended, silver protein-based products add gelatin. Silver protein is the second-most popular type of colloidal silver product on the market and can easily be made by adding water to silver protein powder. Again, it’s also often marketed and labeled as colloidal silver, but should not be confused for the real thing. Silver protein is less effective for human use, and you won’t experience the true colloidal silver benefits.

True Colloidal Silver –

Lastly, true silver colloids don’t contain any protein or other additives, as the vast majority of the silver content consists of nanometre-sized silver particles. (4)

Colloidal Silver Side Effects

Although the National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health reports that colloidal silver may cause poor absorption of some drugs, there is limited research proving that side effects to colloidal silver use even exist. (17)

Nonetheless, you may come across many warnings about it causing an irreversible condition called argyria (when people turn blue). However, this is caused by misuse not of true colloidal silver, but through other cheaper products marketed as colloidal silver, such as ionic silver or silver protein.

One point to consider is that, because colloidal silver is such a potent antibacterial agent, you should be sure to supplement with probiotics during use to be sure that you maintain a proper balance of microflora.

Colloidal Dosage & Use

Colloidal silver needs to be applied differently for each condition. To experience colloidal silver benefits, it may be taken as follows, always keeping in mind to never use it for more than 14 days in a row.

  • 2-5 drops applied directly to the skin
  • 1 eyedropper taken orally for immune support
  • 1-2 drops into eyes for pink eye
  • 1-2 drops can help disinfect any wound or sore by applying onto a Band-Aid
  • If prepared properly, it can be injected into a muscle, a cancerous tumor, or into the bloodstream
  • 5 drops added into a neti pot or directly sprayed into the nose
  • 5-10 drops can be applied vaginally or anally (18)

Home run with HEMPSEED oil

Doctor’s and researchers all over the world are stunned by this oil that is…

Antibacterial
Antiviral
Antifungal
Antioxidant
Anti-inflammatory
Skin regenerative
Cardio protective

So why aren’t we using it for EVERYTHING?

Dear Reader,

It’s controversial, but I’ll come right out and say it:

Unless you’re prepared to worry about cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and Alzheimer’s for the rest of your life, YOU SHOULD BE USING HEMP.

Not the type of hemp you’re associating with the recreational drug, marijuana, but the powerful health oil from the seeds of the hemp plant.

Confused?

Well that’s probably because the one thing you don’t know about hemp is that not only does it contain almost no trace of the psychoactive properties marijuana is famous for but, over the last 20 years, some of the world’s most trusted medical institutions – including the World Health Organisation, Harvard Medical School, the Mayo Clinic and John Hopkins Medical Centre – have published over 17,000 reports supporting hemp seed oil as a natural remedy.

  • John Hopkins Medical Centre says it causes cancer cell suicide!
  • The University of Manitoba in Canada reports it puts the brakes on the blood sugarrollercoaster you’re on.
  • The University of Nagoya in Japan declares it slashes your heart attack risk by 66%.
  • Studies published by international journal, Advanced Nutrition Publications, reveal it provides relief from joint pain, muscle pain and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • While memory expert, Dr Fiona McPherson confirms it regenerates the part of the brain that stores memories.

But these studies aren’t the reason I’m such a big believer in hemp seed oil. It’s the thousands upon thousands of success stories I’ve read.
The results don’t lie!
People using hemp oil are blowing the sceptics away
“From death’s door to CANCER-FREE in just eight months – it’s all thanks to hemp oil”

Take oncologist, Dr William Courtney who had the daunting task of treating an eight month old baby suffering from a malignant, inoperable brain tumour.

Her parents declined chemotherapy. Yet, her dad pushed Dr Courtney to help improve his child’s quality of life with hemp seed oil.

It did much more than that!

After only two months, an MRI scan revealed a dramatic improvement in the tumour size.

Miraculously, six months later, the scans were completely clean.

That’s right. No cancer remained!

Impossible?

Here’s a picture of her actual scans. They show how hemp oil helped her go from hopeless case to cancer-free in just eight months.

Then there’s Rick Simpson…

“Hemp seed oil solved Rick’s headaches, insomnia and ringing ears – it even defeated his joint pain and lowered his blood pressure”

Rick was working in a hospital boiler room when he suffered a concussion. For years afterwards, he suffered from debilitating headaches, ringing ears and had trouble sleeping.

In 1998, he decided that since his prescription meds weren’t working anyway, he’d try marijuana. Eventually, he started experimenting with hemp seed oil because the marijuana was interfering with his day-to-day life.

Soon after he started using it, his headaches went away, the ringing in his ears became tolerable and he slept better. More surprising, his arthritis disappeared and his blood pressure improved too.

“Within a few months, people saw the difference. The oil controlled the pain, my blood pressure, and it allowed me to sleep. I lost weight and looked 20 years younger.”

Today, Rick is hemp seed oil’s biggest champion. He’s dedicated his life to giving people with all types of diseases and disabilities free hemp seed oil. And he’s had over 5,000 success stories to date.

In fact, he’s adamant this is a “cure-all solution”, he believes “if children were given tiny doses of [hemp] oil each day like a supplement, diseases like cancer, diabetes, MS, and many other conditions could be eliminated entirely.”

How about Lorraine from the Free State? She recently wrote in to tell me about her experience with hemp oil. Here’s her story…

“My diabetes is gone!”

“I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes after my doctor discovered my thyroid wasn’t working thanks to years of hormone replacement medication. My sugar was out of control, I couldn’t lose weight and my health was so bad even my liver was beginning to shut down.

A friend told me about hemp seed oil and how it could help.

Naturally, I was sceptical and worried about the negative effects, but I felt hopeless and ready to try anything.

I’m glad I did.

It’s been just over a year now and my blood sugar has stabilised, my thyroid is working and I’ve been able to lose the weight. My health is better than ever.”

Then there’s the story Health Bytes nutritionist, Jacques Boshoff, told me about a patient he recommended hemp oil to.

“I used to have dialysis every day – now I only go once a month”

“Mr Kogohara started using hemp oil because he was suffering from kidney failure. Having to live on dialysis daily, he was ready to try anything and started taking hemp seed oil with his morning detoxjuice.

It’s been almost a year and Mr Kogohara is doing so well his kidneys are almost functioning on their own again. The best part is, he now only has to have precautionary dialysis once a month.”

There’s also:

  • Constance Finley a San Francisco woman living with ankylosing spondylitis – chronic arthritis of the spine and the pelvis. After an almost fatal allergic reaction to the drugs she was on, Constance put hemp seed oil to the test. Today, she’s pain-free.
  • Famous comedian, Tommy Chong. In 2012, he announced he had stage 1 prostate cancer. Thanks to hemp seed oil, Tommy told the world he was cancer-free a year after receiving the diagnosis.
  • 24-year-old Kristina Marie. She believed her doctors had handed her a death sentence when they diagnosed her with a brain tumour. Since starting hemp oil treatment in 2014, Kristina’s brain tumour size has halved – and it’s still shrinking.

The success stories go on and on…

Personally, I could read them all day.

But there’s something far more pressing.

And that’s the question you’re asking yourself right now….

Based on the mounds of evidence that shows it works…
Why does mainstream medicine still refuse to promote hemp seed oil?
Why hasn’t your doctor told you to try it?
It’s the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) fault.

Doctors are afraid to prescribe this medical herb simply because the FDA hasn’t approved it yet.

And even though in December the FDA finally gave a few universities permission to run trials on its effects on seizures, cancer and arthritis, it’ll be years before it gives hemp oil the nod. Let alone, make it okay for your doctor to prescribe it to you.

Years where you’ll continue to suffer from cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and more.

Not if I can help it….
I’ve had it with mainstream medicine’s decision to ignore the results people have seen!

Benefits of Black Seed

The seeds of the annual flowering plant, Nigella Sativa, have been prized for their healing properties since time immemorial.  While frequently referred to among English-speaking cultures as Roman coriander, black sesame, black cumin, black caraway and onion seed, it is known today primarily as black seed, which is at the very least an accurate description of its physical appearance. The earliest record of its cultivation and use come from ancient Egypt.

Black seed oil, in fact, was found in Egyptian pharoah Tutankhamun’s tomb, dating back to approximately 3,300 years  ago

[i]  In Arabic cultures, black cumin is known as Habbatul barakah, meaning the “seed of blessing.” It is also believed that the Islamic prophet Mohammed said of it that it is “a remedy for all diseases except death.”

egyptian tomb - benefits of black seed

Many of black cumin’s traditionally ascribed health benefits have been thoroughly confirmed in the biomedical literature. In fact, since 1964, there have been 656 published,  peer-reviewed studies referencing it.

We have indexed salient research, available to view on GreenMedInfo.com on our Black Seed (Nigella Sativa) page, on well over 40 health conditions that may be benefited from the use of the herb, including over 20 distinct pharmacological actions it expresses, such as:

  • Analgesic (Pain-Killing)
  • Anti-Bacterial
  • Anti-Inflammatory
  • Anti-Ulcer
  • Anti-Cholinergic
  • Anti-Fungal
  • Ant-Hypertensive
  • Antioxidant
  • Antispasmodic
  • Antiviral
  • Bronchodilator
  • Gluconeogenesis Inhibitor (Anti-Diabetic)
  • Hepatoprotective (Liver Protecting)
  • Hypotensive
  • Insulin Sensitizing
  • Interferon Inducer
  • Leukotriene Antagonist
  • Renoprotective (Kidney Protecting)
  • Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Inhibitor

These 30 pharmacological actions are only a subset of a far wider number of beneficial properties intrinsic to the black seed. While it is remarkable that this seed has the ability to positively modulate so many different biological pathways, this is actually a rather common occurrence among traditional plant medicines.

Natural RX: Greenmedinfo

Our project has identified over 1600 natural compounds with a wide range of health benefits, and we are only in our first 5 years of casual indexing. There are tens of thousands of other substances that have already been researched, with hundreds of thousands of studies supporting their medicinal value (MEDLINE, whence our study abstracts come, has over 600,000 studies classified as related to Complementary and Alternative Medicine).

Take turmeric, for example. We have identified research indicating its value in over 600 health conditions, while also expressing over 160 different potentially beneficial pharmacological actions. You can view the quick summary of over 1500 studies we have summarized on our Turmeric Research page, which includes an explorative video on turmeric. Professional database members are further empowered to manipulate the results according to their search criteria, i.e. pull up and print to PDF the 61 studies on turmeric and breast cancer.  This, of course, should help folks realize how voluminous the supportive literature indicating the medicinal value of natural substances, such as turmeric and black seed, really is.

Black seed has been researched for very specific health conditions. Some of the most compelling applications include:

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Two grams of black seed a day resulted in reduced fasting glucose, decreased insulin resistance, increased beta-cell function, and reduced glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in human subjects.[ii]
  • Helicobacter Pylori Infection: Black seeds possess clinically useful anti-H. pylori activity, comparable to triple eradication therapy.[iii]
  • Epilepsy: Black seeds were traditionally known to have anticonvulsive properties. A 2007 study with epileptic children, whose condition was refractory to conventional drug treatment, found that a water extract significantly reduced seizure activity.[iv]
  • High Blood pressure: The daily use of 100 and 200 mg of black seed extract, twice daily, for 2 months, was found to have a blood pressure-lowering effect in patients with mild hypertension.[v]
  • Asthma: Thymoquinone, one of the main active constituents within Nigella sativa (black cumin), is superior to the drug fluticasone in an animal model of asthma.[vi] Another study, this time in human subjects, found that boiled water extracts of black seed have relatively potent anti-asthmatic effect on asthmatic airways.[vii]
  • Acute tonsillopharyngitis: characterized by tonsil or pharyngeal inflammation (i.e. sore throat), mostly viral in origin, black seed capsules (in combination with Phyllanthus niruri) have been found to significantly alleviate throat pain, and reduce the need for pain-killers, in human subjects.[viii]
  • Chemical Weapons Injury: A randomized, placebo-controlled human study of chemical weapons injured patients found that boiled water extracts of black seed reduced respiratory symptoms, chest wheezing, and pulmonary function test values, as well as reduced the need for drug treatment.[ix]
  • Colon Cancer: Cell studies have found that black seed extract compares favorably to the chemoagent 5-fluoruracil in the suppression of colon cancer growth, but with a far higher safety profile.[x] Animal research has found that black seed oil has significant inhibitory effects against colon cancer in rats, without observable side effects.[xi]
  • MRSA: Black seed has anti-bacterial activity against clinical isolates of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus.[xii]
  • Opiate Addiction/Withdrawal: A study on 35 opiate addicts found black seed as an effective therapy in long-term treatment of opioid dependence.[xiii]

Sometimes the biblical reference to ‘faith the size of a mustard seed moving mountains’ comes to mind in connection with natural substances like black seeds. After all, do seeds not contain within them the very hope for continuance of the entire species that bore it?  This super-saturated state of the seed, where life condenses itself down into an intensely miniaturized holographic fragment of itself, promising the formation of future worlds within itself, is the very emblem of life’s immense and immortal power.

If we understand the true nature of the seed, how much life (past, present and future) is contained within it, it will not seem so far-fetched that it is capable of conquering antibiotic resistant bacteria, healing the body from chemical weapons poisoning, or stimulate the regeneration of dying insulin-producing beta cells in the diabetic, to name but only a fraction of black seed’s experimentally-confirmed powers.

black seeds

Moving the mountain of inertia and falsity associated with the conventional concept of disease, is a task well-suited for seeds and not chemicals. The greatest difference, of course, between a seed and a patented synthetic chemical (i.e. pharmaceutical drug), is that Nature (God) made the former, and men with profit-motives and a deranged understanding of the nature of the body made the latter.

The time, no doubt, has come for food, seeds, herbs, plants, sunlight, air, clean water, and yes, love, to assume once again their central place in medicine, which is to say, the art and science of facilitating self-healing within the human body. Failing this, the conventional medical system will crumble under the growing weight of its own corruption, ineptitude, and iatrogenic suffering (and subsequent financial liability) it causes. To the degree that it reforms itself, utilizing non-patented and non-patentable natural compounds with actual healing properties, a brighter future awaits on the horizon. To the degree that it fails, folks will learn to take back control over their health themselves, which is why black seed, and other food-medicines, hold the key to self-empowerment.

Turmeric is a commonly found spice and herb that is increasing in popularity, and for good reason. Below we’ll uncover what turmeric is great for when it comes to healing and wellness.

Most typically ingest turmeric by using its powdered form (either for cooking or in tea), but various types of capsuled forms are available on the market also. As with any supplements, of course, quality matters a great deal. It also happens to be one of the primary spices employed in many of the South Asian and Middle-Eastern foods.

A lot of medical benefits of the spice come from the effective compounds, called curcuminoids, that it includes. It’s a good source of a number of vitamin Bs, as well. A number of the important nutrients identified in turmeric contain Vitamin C, Vitamins B1-B3, Calcium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Zinc, and so much more.

Scientific Studies of Turmeric
Studies abound that discuss the various advantages of this spice. The active component in curcumin has been associated with possible antidepressant results. Additionally, it has shown promise with reference to treating clogged arteries, as well as in enhancing autoimmune diseases, among other issues.

As an Antiinflammatory
Your body could experience a scenario whereby aggressive inflammation and tissue destruction happens at once, causing your poor body to try and repair both simultaneously. This is a characteristic of persistent inflammation, which is something which may last for months, if not longer in some individuals. Prospective causes of long term inflammation are protracted exposure to dangerous agents, constant illnesses, and autoimmune issues. The advantages of turmeric can assist in the recuperation from this in a much more rapid time frame than your body would do on its own, and can help relieve a few of the painful sensations connected with inflamation.

It is often said that in the event that you suffer any of the following: digestive difficulties, constipation, allergies, low-energy, arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, infertility, sleeplessness or acne eruption, that liver issues might be a part of the inherent reason. Making a tea from turmeric can give your liver a nice boost, cleanses the body, and even helps with an upset stomach. Drink some today, you’ll be glad you did!

MARVELLOUS MORINGA

 (NaturalNews) Moringa oleifera, also called the drumstick tree and the horseradish tree, is a drought-resistant tree that grows in the foothills of the Himalayan muntains in northern India. It is also cultivated throughout Africa and Central and South America, where it is treasured for is significant medicinal value. In fact, Moringa is nicknamed “The Tree of Immortality” and “The Miracle Tree” in its native lands due to its remarkable healing properties and its ability to grow in the harshest of conditions.Though research into Moringa oleifera is limited due to its relative obscurity in the West, more and more studies are emerging which confirm that this beautiful tree deserves its long-standing reputation as a healer. One of these studies, undertaken by French researchers and published in the Dakar Medjournal, has found that Moringa roots contain impressive anti-inflammatory properties and could help treat acute inflammatory conditions such as bronchitis and rheumatoid arthritis.Promising results

For the study, the researchers administered either distilled water (the control group), 10 mg/kg of indomethacin (an anti-inflammatory drug) or a root extract of Moringa oleifera (750 mg/kg or 1000 mg/kg) to a group of rats. 30 minutes later, the paws of each rat were subjected to edema induced by an injection of carrageenin.

The researchers found that the 750 mg/kg Moringa extract “significantly inhibited” the development of edema between one, three and five hours after the injection. While increasing the moringa extract dosage to 1000 mg/kg didn’t inhibit oedema development any further at 1 and 3 hours, it did increase the effects after 5 hours. The indomethacin inhibited oedema development at comparable levels to the 750 mg/kg moringa extract.

“These findings indicate that an aqueous root extract of Moringa oleifera at 750 mg/kg reduces the carrageenin induced oedema to [a] similar extent as the potent anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin,” concluded the researchers. “Moreover, these results provide further evidence that the roots ofMoringa oleifera contain anti-inflammatory principle that may be useful in the treatment of the acute inflammatory conditions.”

Moringa can treat many conditions

Though this study into Moringa oleifera‘s anti-inflammatory benefits is promising, this tree is packed with so much nutrition that it could probably help treat anything. Analysis reveals that Moringa leaves contain 90 different nutrients, including 36 times more magnesium than eggs, 50 times more vitamin B3 than peanuts, 25 times more iron than spinach and 4 times more calcium than milk. Moringa leaves are also a “complete” protein source that contains 18 amino acids and at least 46 essential antioxidants, including 272 percent of our recommended daily intake of vitamin A. No wonder ancient healing systems such as the Ayurveda claim that Moringa can treat over 300 diseases, including diabetes and cancer.

Moringa oleifera is traditionally consumed in powdered leaf form, though Moringa extracts – widely available online – also provide good results. Alternatively, you might be interested in trying Ben oil, an odorless, sweet-tasting oil made from the tree’s matured pods. This oil, which is comparable to olive oil in nutrient density and antioxidant activity, lasts indefinitely and makes a great survival food.

turmeric

by Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) To the many traditional cultures around the world that have long utilized the spice in cooking and medicine, turmeric’s amazing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer benefits are no secret. But modern, Western cultures are only just now beginning to learn of the incredible healing powers of turmeric, which in more recent days have earned it the appropriate title of “king of all spices.” And as more scientific evidence continues to emerge, turmeric is quickly becoming recognized as a fountain of youth “superspice” with near-miraculous potential in modern medicine.

A cohort of scientific studies published in recent years have shown that taking turmeric on a regular basis can actually lengthen lifespan and improve overall quality of life. A study conducted on roundworms, for instance, found that small amounts of curcumin, the primary active ingredient in turmeric, increased average lifespan by about 39 percent. A similar study involving fruit flies revealed a 25 percent lifespan increase as a result of curcumin intake.

In the first study, researchers found that turmeric helped reduce the number of reactive oxygen species in roundworms, as well as reduce the amount of cellular damage that normally occurs during aging. Curcumin was also observed to improve roundworms’ resistance to heat stress compared to those not taking the spice. And in fruit flies, curcumin appeared to trigger increased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant compound that protects cells against oxidative damage. (http://www.lef.org)

“Given the long and established history of turmeric as a spice and herbal medicine, its demonstrated chemopreventive and therapeutic potential, and its pharmacological safety in model system, curcumin, the bioactive extract of turmeric, promises a great future in human clinical studies designed to prevent and/or delay age-related diseases,” explained the authors of a review on these and other animal studies involving turmeric.

Improve the quality of your life with

therapeutic doses of curcumin

Even with all the data showing that it can help boost energy levels, cleanse the blood, heal digestive disorders, dissolve gallstones, treat infections, and prevent cancer, some health experts have been reluctant to recommend taking turmeric in medicinal doses until human clinical trials have been conducted. But unlike pharmaceutical drugs, taking turmeric is not dangerous, and civilizations have been consuming large amounts of it for centuries as part of their normal diets.

According to consumption data collected back in the 1980s and 1990s, the average Asian person consumes up to 1,000 milligrams of turmeric a day, or as much as 440 grams per year, which equates to roughly 90 milligrams of active curcuminoids per day at higher end of the concentration spectrum. And these figures, of course, primarily cover just the amount of turmeric consumed as food in curries and other traditional dishes, which means supplements with similar concentrations are perfectly safe and effective.

But the truth of the matter is that you can safely take much higher doses of both turmeric and curcumin, and doing so will provide even more benefits. The Linus Pauling Institute atOregon State University (OSU) has compiled a thorough list of turmeric’s benefits with detailed information about the doses used to achieve such benefits. Turmeric and Curcumin –

Good for Your Dog’s Health

Source : http://ottawavalleydogwhisperer.blogspot.com/2012/11/turmeric-and-curcumin-good-for-your.html

Adding Turmeric (Curcuma longa) to your dog’s daily diet can provide your dog with a vast array of health benefits.
Turmeric, a spice is derived from the root of the Curcuma longa (also known as Indian Saffron), a perennial plant of the ginger family. The exact genesis of the plant is not known as the plant’s original origins are lost in the history of ancient trade; however it is likely that the plant originated in South East Asia or South Asia.

The Curcuma longa’s root system includes oblong tubers – similar to those of the ginger plant. The tubers are boiled or steamed, dried, and then ground. The resulting powder has a pungent slightly bitter flavour.
Although dogs have a much better sense of smell than humans – a dog’s noise has a minimum of 300 million olfactory sensors to our paltry 3 million, the dog’s sense of taste is less than ours (a dog averages 1700 taste buds whereas a human has 9000 taste buds). This means that the slightly bitter taste of turmeric is not off-putting for the majority of dogs.
The scent of turmeric is reminiscent of oranges and ginger. Once it is dried and ground into a powder the scent is slightly bitter and medicinal.
Turmeric is a deep, warm yellow-orange color. The rich colour of turmeric comes from a naturally occurring pigment in the Curcuma longa tuber – the pigment is called Curcumin. Curry gets its colour from curcumin and some of its flavour from turmeric. Turmeric is a mainstay of India dishes and is also used as a substitute for saffron.
This revered spice has been used as a dye, flavouring and medicine since 600 BC. Turmeric is a very important spice in India – its use dates back 4000 years to the Vedic culture. India is the main source of the world’s supply of Turmeric, China and Indonesia also grow and produce the spice.
Health Benefits of Turmeric
Curcumin is thought to be the principal pharmacological agent in turmeric. As an ancient medication turmeric was used in traditional Asian medicine as a blood purifier, liver ailment mediator, for the healing of skin diseases and sores and wounds and as a stomach tonic. In Thailand turmeric was used as an astringent, anti-diarrheal agent, appetite stimulant, as a carminative, to treat dizziness, gonorrhoea, peptic ulcers and as a topical treatment to stop bleeding, treat insect bites, treat teeth and gums, eradicate ringworms and heal wounds.

Today, turmeric is one of the most extensively researched herb-spices for pharmacological use. It is favored for its potentially beneficial use in treating and/or reducing symptoms linked to an extensive range of health conditions due to its excellent qualities as an:
  • Analgesic (pain fighting);
  • Antibacterial;
  • Anti-inflammatory;
  • Anti-oxidant;
  • Antiseptic;
  •  Anti-tumour agent (anti-carcinogen);

Turmeric has been shown to be effective in preventing and/or treating:

  • Aids in fat metabolism and weight management;
  • Allergic respiratory disorders – Ashthma;
  • Arthritis;
  • Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties relieves aches and pains associated with arthritis (see additional information under curcumin below);
  • Beneficial for trauma from accidents as it helps lower serum levels which would otherwise cause massive inflammation leading to the shutdown of the heart and other organs;
  • Artherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries – heart disease) by lowering bad LDL cholesterol;
  • Bacterial infections – the volatile oil is an external broad spectrum antibiotic which acts to prevent bacterial infection in wounds;
  • Blood purifier – beneficial in the treatment of skin disorders;
  • Cancer inhibitor;
  • Cardiovascular conditions;
  • Chemotherapy – reduces the negative side-effects of chemotherapy;
  • Detoxifier – turmeric is a natural liver detoxifier;
  • Disinfectant for wounds and burns (antiseptic and antibacterial);
  • Digestive disorders;
  • Turmeric induces the flow of bile which acts to breakdown fat;
  • Protects against injuries caused by some medications;
  • Helps prevent gas/bloating;
  • Inflammation (turmeric’s anti-inflammatory quality has been compared to topical hydrocortisone);
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD;
  • Memory disorders;
  • Neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve)
  • Peptic ulcers;
  • Skin disorders;
  • Strengthens ligaments.
Other Health Benefits of Turmeric
  • High in fiber;
  • Rich in vitamins (high in vitamin B6 and potassium) and minerals (high in iron and manganese);
  • Excellent for metabolism health and a natural weight-loss aid.
  • Turmeric is even more powerful as a cancer inhibitor when teamed up with cauliflower…of particular importance to prevent prostate cancer.
  • This dog-food recipe includes both turmeric and cauliflower.
Health Benefits of Curcumin
  • Anti-oxidant (anti-aging);
  • Anti-Angiogenic (tumour preventing);
  • Anti-Carcinogenic;
  • Anti-Diabetic;
  • Anti-Inflammatory;
  • Anti-Apoptotic (preventing cell death i.e. from radiation);
  • Anti-Metastatic (inhibits the over-growth of cells);
  • Cardiovascular Protection;
  • Lower LDL (bad) Cholesterol;
  • Detoxer;
  • Imuno-modulatory (immune system enhancing);
  • Neuro-Protective (protects the Central Nervous System – CNS).
Anti-Inflammatory – curcumin has been shown in numerous studies, to be comparable to the potent conventional medicines hydrocortisone, phenylbutazone as well as over-the counter anti-inflammatory agents. But unlike these conventional mendicants curcumin does not have toxic side-effects.
Cancer Inhibitor – due to its powerful antioxidant properties. Curcumin is effective in protecting colon cells from free radicals that can cause damage to healthy cell DNA – of particular importance as cell growth in the colon is particularly rapid. Curcumin also helps the body destroy mutated cancer cells thereby stopping the spread of cancer throughout the body. Curcumin enhances liver function – the liver is a primary toxin filter for the body, so enhancing its function supports health in many ways. Curcumin is also considered to inhibit the growth of the protein that is thought to be instrumental in triggering tumour formation. Curcumin has been shown to inhibit transcription factors (the ‘master switch’ that regulates genes required for tumor formulation).
Lower Bad Cholesterol and support Heart Health – Curcumin is a messaging molecule that communicates with genes in live cells. This active agent of turmeric directs cells to increase the production of messenger proteins that in turn direct the creation of receptors for LDL (Bad) cholesterol. An increase of LDL-receptors enables the liver to clear more LDL from the body.
Preventing Toxic Loading and Liver Damage – The liver plays a huge role in detoxifying the body. As dogs are exposed to ever increasing amounts of toxins in their diet (i.e. as found in many commercially produced dog foods and treats, dental care products – dental chews and toothpaste) and their environment (i.e. household cleaners, road salt, grassshampoo etc.) the incidence of liver damage and liver failure is exponentially increasing. Turmeric boosts the ability of the liver to de-toxify.
Rheumatoid Arthritis – clinical studies have proven that curcumin provides highly powerful antioxidant effects as its ability to neutralize free radicals is substantial. Free radicals cause the painful inflammation and eventual damage to joints.
Defence Against Neurological Diseases of Old-Age – as curcumin is able to turn on gene codes for the production of antioxidant proteins it provides enhanced protection against some neurological diseases brought on by old age.
Weight and Metabolism Management –If your dog is overweight you might want to try adding either turmeric or curcumin to his/her daily diet…new research by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed that curcumin helps to speed up metabolism.
The Dog Food Industry and Turmeric
Many commercial dog food manufacturers are now putting turmeric in their dog kibble. But please don’t be fooled by advertising – the inclusion of turmeric in commercially prepared dog kibble is not an indication that the kibble is a nutritionally balanced quality product.
The quantity and quality of the turmeric included in the food may be insufficient to have any positive effect on your dog’s health and worse – the turmeric may be of poor quality (i.e. grown with pesticides).
Turmeric is becoming a ‘hot word’ in the pet food manufacturing sector, just as ‘omega’ and ‘probiotic’. As the pet food industry – at least in North America) is unregulated pertaining to their use of terms vs. factual substantiation of actual quality/ratio of ingredient.
Manufactures rely on the ignorance of the consumer – profit before ethics. I have yet to see a commercially prepared dog kibble that includes the appropriate ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids. Adding ‘probiotics’ to commercially prepared dog kibble is a ridiculous conceit as the heat required during processing of the kibble kills the probiotic microorganisms, thus rendering them useless.
So just as with omega fatty acids and probiotics – your best bet is to add turmeric directly to your dog’s diet – do not expect the trace amounts included in some dog foods to benefit your dog’s health.
Adding Turmeric (or Curcumin) to Your Dog’s Daily Diet is Simple…

  • Sprinkle it on top of your dog’s dry or wet food, and/or;
  • If you home-cook your dog’s food you can add turmeric to your dog-food recipe;
  • You can also try this dog food recipe that I use which contains turmeric.
  • My dogs get turmeric on a daily basis in their homemade dog food and also sprinkled on top of their daily ration of fresh food along with other herbs and spices.
  • You can also add turmeric to homemade dog treats.
What Type of Turmeric (or Curcumin) is Best…
You can use powder (most commonly available), crushed or fresh root. I use the powder form (ground turmeric). The quality of turmeric varies vastly. Turmeric sold is in the typical grocery store and bulk food store is mass produced, grown with pesticides and herbicides and is, as a result low in beneficial potency. For maximum benefit it is best to purchase turmeric from a reputable supplier of high-quality organic turmeric.
How To Store Turmeric (or Curcumin)
Fresh turmeric rhizome should be kept in the refrigerator;
Turmeric and/or curcumin powder should be stored in a tightly sealed, container and kept in a cool, dark, dry location.
Turmeric and Curcumin is a Natural Dye

When feeding your dog turmeric powder on top of food, just make sure you don’t place your dog’s food bowl on a surface such as a cherished carpet as the deep yellow-gold colour of the spice can stain the surface it falls on.
